Music is a fundamental part of the complete education of a child. It is a part of everyday life – from the primitive chant to the modern electronic compositions; all civilizations seek to express the personal and collective emotions of people through music. As a culture becomes more sophisticated, its music, notation, and interpretation develop in complexity.
Experimenting with music is a natural activity of all people from infancy through adulthood. Discovery and manipulation of the many facets of music can lead to enjoyment and aesthetic sensibility when guided by a careful and experienced hand. Music is also a discipline, which requires mastery of skills and techniques. A good music education program provides a balance between creative musical experience and the implementation of musical skills. These skills reinforce all other academic areas including: languages, auditory, motor, visual, and speech functions.
